About the Annual Electricity Concession

Unlike the flat-dollar rebates in most states, Victoria's concession is a percentage: 17.5% off your electricity usage and supply charges, after any retailer discounts and solar credits. The more your bill, the more the concession is worth, up to a limit.

The first $171.60 of your yearly bill is not covered, which works out as 8.23 cents a day taken off the concession. On a 4,000 kWh year at the Victorian Default Offer for Powercor, about $1,633, the concession would be worth roughly $256.

Very high users have an extra step. If your bill goes over $4,038.82 in the year starting 1 December 2025, you must apply for the Excess Electricity Concession to keep getting the discount on the part above that amount.

Who can get it

How to apply

  1. Phone your electricity retailer, or use its website, and give your concession card details.
  2. Your retailer checks your card with Centrelink and applies the concession to your bills.
  3. Ask for it to be backdated if you have been eligible for a while. It can go back up to 12 months.

How it is paid: As a discount on every electricity bill.

Moving or switching retailer?

Concessions applied by your retailer do not always move with you. When you move house or switch, give your card details to the new retailer and check the next bill. See how to claim a concession.

Common questions

17.5% of your electricity usage and supply charges, after retailer discounts and solar credits, minus 8.23 cents a day, so the first $171.60 of your yearly bill is not covered.

Yes, for up to 12 months, or from your concession card start date if that is more recent.

It may be a problem with your card details, or your usage may have passed the excess threshold of $4,038.82 a year. Your retailer will send an Excess Electricity Concession form if that is the case.
