About WattNavi: Plain-English Guides to Australian Energy

WattNavi explains what Australian households pay for electricity and gas, and how to pay less, using figures you can trace back to the regulator.

What WattNavi covers

The site covers the parts of household energy that most people find hard to compare: regulated electricity prices in every state, average bills, retailers and networks, rebates and concessions, solar and batteries, and gas. Our calculators turn your own usage into a cost so you can check a bill or test a decision before you make it.

Where our numbers come from

We take prices and rules from the organisations that set them: the Australian Energy Regulator, state regulators such as IPART, the Essential Services Commission and the Queensland Competition Authority, state governments, the Clean Energy Regulator and the networks themselves. Retail plan prices come from the AER's Energy Made Easy product reference data, the same data behind the government comparison site.

Where no official figure exists, such as the installed price of solar panels and batteries, we use a named industry index and say so on the page. Full details are on our data sources page.

How we rank plans

  1. Same usage for everyone

Electricity plans are priced at 2,500, 4,000 and 6,500 kWh a year; gas plans at the AER usage benchmark for the state.

  2. Only discounts you will get

Guaranteed discounts are included. Pay-on-time, direct debit and other conditional discounts are left out.

  3. Plans anyone can join

Plans limited to existing customers, members or particular equipment are left out of rankings.

  4. GST included

All prices include GST, as retailers quote them to households.

How we write

We write for the person reading a bill at the kitchen table: short sentences, real numbers and a clear answer near the top. When a rule is uncertain or changing, we say so and link to the source rather than guess. Prices change every July, so each page shows when it was last checked.
