The gaps between states are mostly about usage, not price. Victorian and Canberra homes heat with gas through long cold winters, so they use several times what a Brisbane home does. Victorian rates per MJ are among the lowest of the areas we priced.

How to read a gas price

The parts of a gas plan
Supply chargeA fixed amount for every day you are connected, whether you use gas or not.
Usage rateCents per MJ. Most plans charge a higher rate for the first block of gas in each billing period and less after that.
Seasonal ratesMany Victorian plans charge more for gas used in winter, when demand is highest.
DiscountsGuaranteed discounts always apply; conditional ones need you to pay on time or by direct debit.

One MJ equals 0.2778 kWh, so a rate of 4c per MJ is the same as about 14.4c per kWh of energy. See reading your gas meter and bill.

Tasmania and the Northern Territory

No residential gas plans for Tasmania or the Northern Territory are published in the AER's plan data. The AER notes that mains gas use in Tasmania is very low; homes without mains gas use electricity or bottled LPG.

Common questions

Market plans' first-block rates range from about 3.89c to 7.02c per MJ across the capitals we priced, plus a daily supply charge. Later blocks are usually cheaper.

Per MJ, Victoria's rates are among the lowest. Per year, Queensland homes pay least because they use so little gas.

No. The DMO and Victorian Default Offer cover electricity only. WA is the only state with regulated maximum gas prices for households.
