How gas is priced in New South Wales
NSW gas prices are not regulated. Retailers set their own, and the price depends on your network. Jemena Gas Networks supplies Sydney, Newcastle, the Central Coast and Wollongong on the same tariffs, so the Sydney figures below apply to all of them. Gas plans charge a daily supply charge plus a rate per megajoule (MJ). Most use stepped blocks, where the first slice of gas in each billing period costs more than the rest, and many charge more in winter. That is why a low first rate does not always mean a cheap plan.

Common questions
On the Jemena network, the median first-block rate across market plans is about 4.95c per MJ, with a supply charge around $0.76 a day, GST included. Later blocks are usually cheaper.
As at 14 October 2026, the cheapest open plan for a three-person home in Parramatta was Sumo's Sumo Winter Saver, at about $838 a year on the AER benchmark usage.
