How gas is priced in the ACT

Gas in the ACT runs on the Evoenergy network, which also supplies Queanbeyan across the border. Retailers set their own prices. Since 8 December 2023, new gas network connections have not been allowed in most of the ACT, and the ACT Government plans to phase out gas by 2045. Existing connections can stay.

Gas plans charge a daily supply charge plus a rate per megajoule (MJ). Most use stepped blocks, where the first slice of gas in each billing period costs more than the rest, and many charge more in winter. That is why a low first rate does not always mean a cheap plan.

The ACT Electricity, Gas and Water Rebate of $800 a year covers gas as well as electricity and water. See gas phase-out rules.
