How gas is priced in Queensland
Gas prices in Queensland are set by retailers. North of the Brisbane River, gas runs on Australian Gas Networks; south of the river, the Gold Coast, Toowoomba and Oakey are on Allgas. Because Queensland households use little gas, the supply charge is a large share of the bill: about $301 a year on a typical Brisbane market plan, before any gas is used.

Gas plans charge a daily supply charge plus a rate per megajoule (MJ). Most use stepped blocks, where the first slice of gas in each billing period costs more than the rest, and many charge more in winter. That is why a low first rate does not always mean a cheap plan.

For a three-person home on the AGN network, the cheapest open plan costs about $653 a year and a typical market plan about $721, as at 14 October 2026.
The pipes are run by Allgas Energy. You buy gas from a retailer, such as AGL, Origin or Alinta Energy.
Queensland homes use little gas, so the fixed daily supply charge makes up a large share of the bill. If you only cook with gas, it can cost more than the gas itself.
