How gas is priced in Victoria
Victoria has three gas networks. Multinet covers eastern Melbourne, Australian Gas Networks the north and south-east and much of regional Victoria, and AusNet the west, Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo. Each has several tariff zones, so prices differ even within Melbourne. Most Victorian plans charge more for gas used in winter. The Victorian Default Offer covers electricity only; there is no default gas price.

Gas plans charge a daily supply charge plus a rate per megajoule (MJ). Most use stepped blocks, where the first slice of gas in each billing period costs more than the rest, and many charge more in winter. That is why a low first rate does not always mean a cheap plan.

Card holders get 17.5% off winter gas bills through the Winter Gas Concession. New Victorian homes must be all-electric from 1 January 2027, and gas hot water at the end of its life must be replaced with electric from 1 March 2027. See gas phase-out rules.
