What to know first

GreenPower is the government-accredited program that lets you pay extra so your retailer buys renewable energy equal to some or all of your usage. It is charged per kWh on top of your normal rates.

The price varies a lot. At about 1c per kWh, 100% GreenPower adds roughly $40 a year to a home using 4,000 kWh. At about 5c, it adds roughly $200. Some retailers, such as Nectr, include it in the plan price instead of charging it separately.

GreenPower is not the same as a carbon neutral plan. Carbon neutral plans pay for offsets against the emissions from your usage, while GreenPower adds accredited renewable energy to the grid on your behalf. Check which one a plan is selling before you pay extra.

How these prices were worked out

Every price on this page comes from the plans retailers publish to the AER's Energy Made Easy data under the Consumer Data Right, as at 14 October 2026. We price flat-rate (single rate) plans that any household in the area can sign up for, at 2,500, 4,000, 6,500 kWh a year, including GST, the daily supply charge and guaranteed discounts. Conditional discounts, such as for paying on time, are left out. Plans limited to members, existing customers or homes with particular equipment are excluded. Retailers with wholesale-linked prices are listed separately, not ranked.

Prices change, sometimes weekly. Always confirm the current price on the retailer's plan fact sheet or a government comparison site before you switch. Our switching guide covers the steps.

Common questions

Diamond Energy lists 100% GreenPower from 0.55c per kWh, the lowest published price we found as at 14 October 2026.

For a home using 4,000 kWh a year, between about $22 and $72,000 a year, depending on the retailer. You can also buy a smaller share, such as 25% or 50%, for less.

Usually, yes. Most retailers let existing customers add GreenPower to their current plan, at a percentage you choose. It shows as a separate charge per kWh on your bill.

The electricity reaching your home is the same either way. What GreenPower changes is how much renewable energy is bought and added to the grid, matched to the share of your usage you pay for.
