About Amber Electric

Amber Electric passes the wholesale cost of electricity through to customers, with prices that change every 30 minutes with the market. Instead of a margin on each kWh, Amber charges a monthly subscription.

That model rewards households that can use power when the wholesale price is low, usually in the middle of the day when solar floods the grid, and avoid the evening peak. Homes with batteries, which can charge cheaply and discharge when prices spike, are best placed.

Because prices move with the market, Amber's published rates are estimates. We show its plans here but do not rank it against fixed-rate retailers. Amber's plan data also includes plans flagged as fixed price, so check which kind of plan you are being offered, and check the current subscription fee on Amber's website, because published figures have varied.

Prices that move with the market

Amber Electric's usage prices follow the wholesale market, so the rates it publishes are a guide rather than a fixed price. That is why it is not included in our cheapest-plan rankings. Households that can shift usage to cheap hours, or have a battery, are best placed to benefit.

Where Amber Electric sells

Amber Electric publishes plans in 11 networks. Because its usage prices follow the wholesale market, we list where it sells and what it pays for solar rather than a yearly price.
