About the Life Support Equipment Energy Subsidy

The subsidy helps with the energy cost of running life support equipment at home under specialist advice. Each listed item has its own yearly amount, and the payment goes straight into your bank account.

Oxygen concentrators attract the largest amounts: $1,011 for a standard adult unit, $1,460 for a high-capacity unit and $1,517 for a child. CPAP machines are covered only for specified life-threatening conditions and, for adults, usage over four hours a night.

You need a means-tested card: a Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card or Health Care Interim Voucher. The Commonwealth Seniors Health Card does not qualify for this subsidy.

Who can get it

  • You are the patient, or the guardian or primary carer of a patient, who depends on specified life support equipment at home under specialist medical advice.
  • You hold a Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card or Health Care Interim Voucher. The Commonwealth Seniors Health Card does not qualify.
  • The equipment is prescribed by a relevant medical practitioner, or by a GP working from a specialist's written diagnosis.
