Who to call in Victoria

Melbourne is split between all five networks. CitiPower covers the CBD and inner suburbs, Jemena the north-west, United Energy the south-east and Mornington Peninsula, AusNet the outer east and north, and Powercor the west. Regional Victoria is mostly Powercor in the west and AusNet in the east.

Victoria's storms of 13 February 2024 showed how widespread outages can get: storm damage left a peak of about 530,000 customers without power, most of them on the AusNet and United Energy networks.

Victoria has its own rules for planned outages and network service standards rather than the national retail rules. Your network's website explains the notice it gives.

What to do in an outage

  1. Check for danger

Fallen or sparking lines: stay well back and call 000. See fallen powerline safety.

  2. Street or just you?

If neighbours have power, check your switchboard. See power out in your house.

  3. Check the outage map

Your network lists known outages with an estimated restoration time.

  4. Report it if not listed

Call the faults line above or report online.

  5. Keep food safe

Keep the fridge and freezer closed. See the blackout checklist.

Your rights during outages

Victoria sets its own rules for planned outage notice and service standards. Your network explains the notice it gives on its website. If you rely on life support equipment, register it with your retailer.

Compensation

Long or repeated outages may qualify for a payment, and you may be able to claim for damage caused by a network fault. See power outage compensation.

Common questions

Use your network's outage map. AusNet runs Outage Tracker, and CitiPower, Powercor, United Energy and Jemena each publish current outages on their websites.
