What to know first
On a fixed-price plan, the usage and supply rates are locked for a set term shown on the fact sheet. On a variable plan, which is most plans, the retailer can change prices with notice, and most do so at least once a year.
A fixed price protects you from rises during the term, but it also means you miss out if prices fall. Check what happens when the term ends, because many plans roll onto a new rate you will need to compare again.
Price a fixed plan on your own usage, the same way you would any other plan, and compare it with the cheapest variable plans in your network. Put the end date in your calendar so you can shop around again before the rates change.

How these prices were worked out
Every price on this page comes from the plans retailers publish to the AER's Energy Made Easy data under the Consumer Data Right, as at 14 October 2026. We price flat-rate (single rate) plans that any household in the area can sign up for, at 2,500, 4,000, 6,500 kWh a year, including GST, the daily supply charge and guaranteed discounts. Conditional discounts, such as for paying on time, are left out. Plans limited to members, existing customers or homes with particular equipment are excluded. Retailers with wholesale-linked prices are listed separately, not ranked.
Prices change, sometimes weekly. Always confirm the current price on the retailer's plan fact sheet or a government comparison site before you switch. Our switching guide covers the steps.
Common questions
EnergyAustralia, Amber Electric, Flow Power, GloBird Energy and Aurora Energy published fixed-price residential plans as at 14 October 2026.
Not necessarily. You pay for certainty, and the fixed rate can start higher than the best variable plan. A fixed price is worth it when you expect prices to rise during the term or you want a predictable bill.
Your retailer has to tell you before the fixed term ends and explain what you will pay afterwards. That is often a new variable rate, so compare plans again at that point.
You can switch retailers at any time. Check the plan fact sheet for any exit fee before you sign, so you know what leaving early would cost.
