What a solar and battery package costs
| Package | Solar | Battery | Package estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 kW solar + 10 kWh battery | $6,330 | $7,784 to $8,284 | $14,114 to $14,614 |
| 6 kW solar + 20 kWh battery | $6,330 | $14,972 to $15,772 | $21,302 to $22,102 |
| 10 kW solar + 20 kWh battery | $9,810 | $14,972 to $15,772 | $24,782 to $25,582 |
| 10 kW solar + 30 kWh battery | $9,810 | $22,489 to $23,089 | $32,299 to $32,899 |
A hybrid inverter costs more than a plain solar inverter, so a package sits somewhere in the range rather than at the bottom. Real quotes vary with brand, switchboard work and whether you want backup power in a blackout.
Buying together or adding a battery later
Solar and battery together
One install- One hybrid inverter can run both
- One installation and one network application
- Battery sized to the solar from day one
- Higher upfront cost
- Battery payback is slower than solar payback
Solar now, battery later
Staged- Lower cost now
- Real usage data before choosing a battery size
- May need a second inverter or an AC-coupled battery
- Battery discount falls over time
If you are buying solar now and think you will want a battery, ask for a hybrid inverter or a battery-ready system. See AC and DC coupled batteries.
Matching solar and battery sizes
A battery needs spare solar to charge. A 6 kW system in Sydney is deemed to average about 23 kWh a day across the year, less in winter, and the home uses part of that during the day. A 10 kWh battery is a common match for 6.6 kW of panels; bigger batteries usually need bigger arrays. See what size battery you need.
Check every discount
Ask the installer to show the solar STCs and battery STCs separately on the quote, plus any state incentive such as the WA battery rebate or NSW VPP incentive.
Common questions
Combining the October 2026 Solar Choice solar index and August 2026 battery index, a 6 kW system with a 10 kWh battery comes to about $14,114 to $14,614, installed and after federal discounts.
Usually, because one hybrid inverter can run both and there is one installation. The battery still has a longer payback than the solar.
Yes. The panels earn solar STCs and the battery earns STCs under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program. State incentives may add to that.
