| Usable capacity | Battery only | Per kWh | With its own inverter | Per kWh |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 kWh | $7,784 | $778 | $8,284 | $828 |
| 20 kWh | $14,972 | $749 | $15,772 | $789 |
| 30 kWh | $22,489 | $750 | $23,089 | $770 |
| 40 kWh | $29,911 | $748 | $31,111 | $778 |

How much the federal discount takes off
The discount comes from STCs: 6.8 certificates per eligible kWh for batteries installed from 1 May to 31 December 2026, with capacity above 14 kWh counted at a reduced rate. At the $40 Clearing House price, that is worth up to:
| Battery | Eligible kWh after taper | STCs | Value up to |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 kWh | 10.0 | 68 | $2,720 |
| 13.5 kWh | 13.5 | 91 | $3,640 |
| 20 kWh | 17.6 | 119 | $4,760 |
| 30 kWh | 22.7 | 154 | $6,160 |
| 50 kWh | 25.7 | 174 | $6,960 |
The factor drops to 5.7 in January 2027, so the same battery installed next year gets a smaller discount. Full detail is in our battery rebates guide.
What changes the price of a battery
- Inverter set-up. Adding a battery to an existing hybrid inverter is cheapest. Otherwise you need a battery with its own inverter or a new hybrid. See AC and DC coupling.
- Backup. Whole-home or partial backup needs extra hardware and switchboard work.
- Brand. Premium brands cost more than the average; compare like for like.
- Site work. Long cable runs, a switchboard upgrade or fire barriers on the wall add cost. See battery installation rules.
Cost per warrantied kWh
Solar Choice also works out cost per kWh of warrantied output, which accounts for lifetime throughput. In its August 2026 data this fell from $0.28 for 16 to 20 kWh batteries to $0.20 for 40 to 50 kWh. Compare that with the gap between your usage rate and feed-in tariff to judge value. See is a battery worth it.
Common questions
About $7,784 installed where a hybrid inverter is already in place, or $8,284 with its own inverter, after the federal discount and including GST, according to the Solar Choice Battery Price Index for August 2026.
About $14,972 battery only or $15,772 with an inverter, installed and after the federal discount, on the same index.
Hardware prices have been falling, but the federal discount drops twice a year from January 2027 to the end of 2030. The two may partly cancel out, so the price after discount may not fall much.
