Perth is the cheapest capital for every system size in the index, and Darwin the dearest by a wide margin. Hobart is second dearest. Regional prices can differ again, so get local quotes.

What goes into the price

  • Panels and inverter. Brand choice is the main difference between standard and premium quotes. See solar panels and inverters.
  • Installation. Labour, mounting rails, cabling, isolators and safety gear. Tile, steep or two-storey roofs cost more.
  • Switchboard and metering. Older switchboards may need an upgrade, and your retailer may need to swap the meter.
  • The STC discount. Taken off the price by the installer. See how STCs work.

Compare like with like

Two 6.6 kW quotes can differ by thousands because of the brands, the inverter and what installation work is included. Ask for the exact panel and inverter models and a list of extras. Our guide to comparing solar quotes walks through it.

Will solar get cheaper or dearer?

Panel prices have fallen a long way over the past decade, but the STC discount falls each January. In 2026 each kilowatt of panels earns five years of deemed output. In 2027 it drops to four, and in 2030, the final year, to one. Unless hardware keeps getting cheaper, the price after discount will drift up. Batteries follow a separate schedule, explained in our battery rebate guide.

Common questions

A standard 6 kW system averages $6,330 installed and a 10 kW system $9,810, after the STC discount and including GST, according to the Solar Choice Price Index for 1 October 2026. Prices vary by city and by the brands used.

Perth, for every system size in the index. A standard 6 kW system there averaged $5,030 in October 2026, compared with $9,890 in Darwin.

The prices on this page are after the federal STC discount, which installers take off the quote. Any state rebate, such as Solar Victoria's, comes off on top.

The fixed costs of an installation, such as travel, roof safety gear, switchboard work and network paperwork, are spread over more panels.
