What to know first

A seniors plan is a plan you need a Seniors Card to sign up for. Very few retailers publish them, and a seniors plan is not automatically cheaper than the best plan open to everyone, so compare it against the cheapest plans in your network.

Energy concessions are separate. They are paid by state and territory governments to eligible card holders on any retailer's plan, so you can claim one whichever plan you choose. The rules on which cards qualify differ by state.

In most states a Seniors Card on its own does not qualify for the electricity concession, which is aimed at pension and health care card holders. Queensland is an exception: its Electricity Rebate is also open to Queensland Seniors Card holders.

How these prices were worked out

Every price on this page comes from the plans retailers publish to the AER's Energy Made Easy data under the Consumer Data Right, as at 14 October 2026. We price flat-rate (single rate) plans that any household in the area can sign up for, at 2,500, 4,000, 6,500 kWh a year, including GST, the daily supply charge and guaranteed discounts. Conditional discounts, such as for paying on time, are left out. Plans limited to members, existing customers or homes with particular equipment are excluded. Retailers with wholesale-linked prices are listed separately, not ranked.

Prices change, sometimes weekly. Always confirm the current price on the retailer's plan fact sheet or a government comparison site before you switch. Our switching guide covers the steps.

Common questions

ENGIE and AGL published plans that require a Seniors Card as at 14 October 2026.

No. Concessions are paid by state and territory governments on any retailer's plan, as long as you hold an eligible card. Check our concessions guide for the cards that qualify in your state.

Not always. A seniors plan is only limited to card holders. Compare its yearly cost on your usage with the cheapest open plans in your network before choosing it.

Claim any concession you are eligible for, ask your retailer for its best plan on your usage, and look at heating and hot water, which use the most power in most homes. Our guide to bills for pensioners has typical costs.
