About the Powerwall 2
Tesla stopped supplying the Powerwall 2 to Australia after the Powerwall 3 arrived in August 2024, and it no longer appears on the approved battery list. A newly installed Powerwall 2 would not be eligible for the federal discount.
Existing owners keep their 10-year Tesla warranty. Selected units are subject to a product safety recall published by the ACCC, involving battery cells from a third-party supplier that may fail and overheat.

What a Powerwall 2 costs
Installers set their own prices, so get quotes. As a benchmark, the Solar Choice Battery Price Index (August 2026 data) puts the average installed price of a 13.5 kWh battery with its own inverter at about $10,905, after the federal discount and including GST. That is the benchmark for a replacement battery of the same size today, such as a Powerwall 3 or an AC-coupled alternative.
For a 13.5 kWh battery installed in 2026, the federal discount is 91 STCs, worth up to $3,640 at the $40 Clearing House price. See battery costs and battery rebates.
The Powerwall 2 recall
The ACCC published a recall notice for selected Powerwall 2 units, most recently updated in April 2026. Open the Tesla app or contact Tesla to check whether yours is affected, and follow Tesla's instructions.
If your battery is affected
Do not try to open, move or modify the unit. Follow Tesla's instructions and contact Tesla if you see warnings in the app or notice heat, smoke or unusual smells.
Adding to or replacing a Powerwall 2 today means a Powerwall 3 or another approved battery. Compare options in our Powerwall 3 guide.
Powerwall 2 strengths and trade-offs
Strengths
Powerwall 2- Works with any existing solar inverter
- Well proven over many years
- 10-year warranty for existing owners
Trade-offs
Consider- Not sold or eligible for the federal discount now
- Lower power than the Powerwall 3
- Some units subject to a safety recall
Check compatibility and the approved list
Make sure the exact model is on the Clean Energy Council approved battery list and works with your inverter, or the system will not get the federal discount.
Common questions
Yes. Tesla no longer supplies it to Australia and it is not on the Clean Energy Council approved battery list. The Powerwall 3 replaced it.
Only selected units are affected. Check in the Tesla app or contact Tesla. The ACCC recall notice was updated in April 2026.
Both store 13.5 kWh. The Powerwall 3 has a built-in solar inverter and up to 11.04 kW of continuous power; the Powerwall 2 is AC coupled with 5 kW continuous.
