About the Tesla Powerwall
Tesla launched the Powerwall 3 in Australia in August 2024, replacing the Powerwall 2. The big change is the built-in hybrid inverter: a new solar and battery installation needs only the Powerwall 3 and a backup gateway, rather than a separate solar inverter.
It uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells. Extra capacity can be added with Powerwall 3 Expansion units, which add 13.5 kWh each without their own inverter.

What a Tesla Powerwall costs
Installers set their own prices, so get quotes. As a benchmark, the Solar Choice Battery Price Index (August 2026 data) puts the average installed price of a 13.5 kWh battery with its own inverter at about $10,905, after the federal discount and including GST. Tesla is a premium brand, so compare Powerwall quotes against that average and against other batteries of similar size.
For a 13.5 kWh battery installed in 2026, the federal discount is 91 STCs, worth up to $3,640 at the $40 Clearing House price. See battery costs and battery rebates.
Backup and Powerwall 2 owners
Whole-home or partial backup needs Tesla's backup gateway, which switches the home to the battery in a blackout. Ask what is included in the quote. See solar in a blackout.
If you own a Powerwall 2, it is no longer sold here, and some units are subject to a safety recall. See our Powerwall 2 owner guide.
Tesla Powerwall strengths and trade-offs
Strengths
Tesla Powerwall- Built-in solar inverter simplifies new installs
- High continuous power, good for backup
- Polished app and wide installer network
Trade-offs
Consider- Premium pricing
- Single fixed size; expand in 13.5 kWh steps
- Federal discount tapers on the second unit above 14 kWh
Check compatibility and the approved list
Make sure the exact model is on the Clean Energy Council approved battery list and works with your inverter, or the system will not get the federal discount.
