The table assumes about 800 W at jogging pace for 45 minutes, four days a week.

A walking pace on a flat deck uses the least. Running at speed on a steep incline can more than double the draw. Other home gym equipment varies: exercise bikes and rowers with magnetic resistance draw very little, and many need only batteries for the display.

Keeping the cost low

  1. Switch off at the wall after use

Many treadmills keep their console in standby when idle.

  2. Lubricate the belt

A dry belt adds friction, making the motor work harder. Follow the maker's maintenance schedule.

  3. Run in cheaper hours

On a time-of-use plan, a morning or midday session costs less than the evening peak.

Use a dedicated power point

Treadmill makers usually recommend plugging straight into a wall socket, not a power board or extension lead, for safety.

Questions about treadmill running costs

It depends on speed, incline and the user. Walking might draw around 500 W and running on an incline well over 1,000 W. The motor rating is the maximum, not the typical draw.

At about 800 W, roughly 13c on the Ausgrid reference rate.

Some keep the console in standby. Switching off at the wall removes it.
