Horizon Power charges the same rates in regional WA, so a household in Broome or Esperance using the same power pays the same bill as one in Perth. The supply charge is low by national standards, about $435 a year, so nearly the whole bill moves with usage.

Why Perth bills climb in summer

Perth summers are long and hot, and air conditioning is the single biggest reason a WA bill rises. A ducted system running through a heatwave evening uses far more power than anything else in the house. Winter heating adds a smaller bump, mostly in homes without gas.

Solar is worth more when you use it

Synergy pays 2c/kWh for most midday solar exports, but charges 33.26c/kWh for power you buy back. Running the air conditioner, pool pump and dishwasher while the sun is up, or storing solar in a battery, is worth far more than exporting it.

Bringing a WA bill below average

  • Choose the right Synergy plan. You cannot change retailer on the Perth grid, but a plan with cheaper daytime power can suit homes that use power during the day.
  • Claim the Energy Assistance Payment. It is $377.14 a year in 2026-27 for eligible card holders, credited to your account.
  • Cool smarter. Every degree warmer on the air conditioner setting cuts its running cost noticeably.

Questions about average bills in WA

On Synergy Home Plan A1 for 2026-27, a household using 4,000 kWh a year pays about $1,766, or about $295 per two-monthly bill. Usage drives most of the difference between households because the supply charge is low.

About $295 for a 61-day bill at 4,000 kWh a year. A low-usage home pays about $212 and a high-usage home about $434, all on 2026-27 Home Plan A1 prices.

About $147 a month at 4,000 kWh a year on Home Plan A1. Summer months with heavy air conditioning use can cost much more.

No. Horizon Power charges the same regulated rates as Synergy under the state's uniform tariff policy, so a household using the same power pays the same bill whether it is in Perth, Broome or Esperance.

Home Plan A1 rose 2.75% from 1 July 2026, with the usage rate moving from 32.37c to 33.26c/kWh and the supply charge from $1.16 to $1.19 a day. If your bill rose more than that, your usage went up too.

Check whether a different Synergy plan suits when you use power, claim the Energy Assistance Payment if you hold an eligible card, and use your own solar during the day rather than exporting it for 2c. Air conditioning settings make the biggest difference in summer.
