Pod machine

  • Heats only what each cup needs
  • Short warm-up
  • Some models stay on until they time out

Best for: One or two cups a day.

Espresso machine

  • Single boiler or thermoblock heats quickly
  • Steam wand use adds heating time

Best for: Milk coffees at home.

Dual boiler

  • Brew and steam at the same time
  • Highest power draw and longest warm-up
  • Costs the most if left on

Best for: Several coffees in a row.

Keeping coffee costs down

The biggest factor is how long the machine stays on. Using the auto-off setting, or switching off after your last cup, stops the machine keeping a boiler hot for nobody. If your machine has a standby or eco mode, turn it on. For the rest of the kitchen, see our standby power guide.

Electricity is the small part

Even a machine left on for an hour each morning costs far less in electricity than the coffee beans or pods it uses.

Questions about coffee machine running costs

A few minutes at full power. Five minutes on a 1,500 W espresso machine costs about 4c on the Ausgrid reference rate.

Each hour is cheap, but a machine left on all morning keeps its boiler hot by cycling the element. Auto-off or switching off after use removes that cost.

Per cup, usually, because they heat a small amount of water on demand. Dual boiler espresso machines use the most.
