Where Australia's electricity comes from
| Fuel | NSW and ACT | VIC | QLD | WA | SA | TAS | NT | Australia |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coal | 55.3 | 50.6 | 56.5 | 16.4 | 0.0 | 0.0 | 0.0 | 42.7 |
| Natural gas | 3.3 | 3.0 | 10.7 | 57.4 | 21.3 | 2.3 | 81.4 | 16.2 |
| Oil | 0.6 | 0.4 | 1.5 | 4.3 | 1.6 | 0.2 | 9.9 | 1.6 |
| Hydro | 3.5 | 4.2 | 2.0 | 0.2 | 0.0 | 71.8 | 0.0 | 4.7 |

Coal still supplies more than half of generation in NSW, Victoria and Queensland. Gas dominates in the Northern Territory (81.4%) and Western Australia (57.4%). Tasmania runs almost entirely on renewables (97.5%), mostly hydro, and South Australia on 77.1% renewables, mostly wind and solar. About 21.5% of Australia's electricity in 2024-25 was generated outside the electricity sector, mainly rooftop solar on homes and businesses.
How the mix is changing
Generation rose 1.3% in 2024-25, to around 282 terawatt-hours, and reached 287 terawatt-hours in calendar year 2025. In the June quarter of 2026, AEMO reported wind output up 20%, grid-scale solar up 12% and rooftop solar up 6.9% on a year earlier, while coal generation fell 5% and gas generation 30%. Grid-scale battery capacity passed 9 GW.
Renewable energy targets
| Government | Target | Progress |
|---|---|---|
| Australia (federal) | 82% renewable electricity by 2030 | 42% achieved |
| Victoria | 65% by 2030, 95% by 2035 | 42.4% achieved |
| South Australia | 100% renewable electricity by 2027 | 75% of the target |
| ACT | 100% renewable electricity from 2020 | Achieved |
| Queensland | No current renewable target | n/a |
The ACT and South Australia measure their targets on a net basis: renewable generation they fund or produce equal to their consumption, while still trading power with the rest of the NEM.
What this means for your bill
More wind, solar and batteries add low-cost supply and have pushed down wholesale prices. See wholesale electricity prices and, for your own roof, rooftop solar.
Common questions
39.6% of all generation in calendar year 2025, according to the Australian Energy Statistics, and 42.0% on the main grids. In the NEM, renewables reached a record 42.1% in the June quarter of 2026.
42.7% in calendar year 2025. Coal supplies more than half of generation in NSW, Victoria and Queensland, and none in South Australia, Tasmania or the NT.
Tasmania, at 97.5% of generation in 2025, mostly from hydro. South Australia was next at 77.1%, mostly wind and solar.
