A household using 997 kWh over the same 91 days, the 4,000 kWh a year we use to compare states, would pay about $373 on this tariff. Yours is about the same.

How an NT electricity bill adds up

Most Territory homes buy from Jacana Energy at prices set under the NT Government's Electricity Pricing Order. The calculator loads the 2026-27 Standard Residential tariff: 31.68c/kWh plus 62.45c a day, the same in Darwin, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs.

Example: a 1,000 kWh quarter on Jacana Standard Residential
Usage1,000 kWh × 31.68c$316.79
Daily supply91 days × $0.6245$56.83
Total for the quarter$373.62
Flat rate, prices include GST. Rounded to the nearest cent.

The daily charge is half or less of what the eastern states pay, so almost all of an NT bill is usage. That makes the bill swing hard with the air conditioner: a home using 2,000 kWh in a build-up quarter pays about $690.

Pricing an NT time-of-use bill

Switch the calculator to time of use for Jacana's smart meter tariff: 25.83c from 9am to 3pm and 33.22c at all other times. Set the peak share to the share of your usage outside 9am to 3pm. With three quarters of usage outside that window, the blended rate is about 31.37c, barely below the standard tariff's 31.68c. The saving only becomes worthwhile once more of your usage moves into the middle of the day.

When time of use wins in the NT

Time of use pays off when you run the air conditioner, pool pump and washing during the day. If your house is empty until evening and the cooling runs all night, stay on the standard tariff.

Getting the estimate to match your NT bill

  • Solar. Enter 9.33c/kWh for anytime exports, or a blend if you are on the 18.66c Super FiT between 3pm and 9pm.
  • Very high usage. From 1 July 2026 the residential rate covers the first 164 kWh a day on average. Above that, usage is charged at the business tariff.
  • Concession. NT Concession Scheme members can get up to $1,200 a year off electricity, which is not taken off the estimate.

Questions about NT electricity bills

On Jacana Standard Residential for 2026-27, 1,000 kWh over 91 days costs about $374, supply included. Air conditioning often pushes NT usage well above that in the build-up and wet season, and almost all of the bill is usage because the daily charge is low.

Jacana Energy's 2026-27 Standard Residential tariff: 31.68c/kWh plus 62.45c a day, including GST. Switch to time of use for the smart meter tariff at 25.83c from 9am to 3pm and 33.22c at other times.

Only if a good share of your usage falls between 9am and 3pm. The off-peak window is six hours, so most homes use most of their power at the higher 33.22c rate. Homes that cool during the day and run the pool pump at midday can come out ahead.

Enter your exported kWh in the solar section with a blended rate. Exports between 3pm and 9pm earn 18.66c on the Super FiT with a smart meter, and other exports earn 9.33c. If you do not know the split, start with 9.33c.

From 1 July 2026 the residential tariff applies to the first 164 kWh a day, averaged over the billing period. Usage above that is charged at the business rate. Jacana says it only affects homes with bills over $1,500 a month.

No. NT Concession Scheme members can get up to $1,200 a year off electricity, covering up to 8,000 kWh. Take the share for your billing period off the estimate.
